When Amy Stark, M.D., entered medical school in 2009, she did so with the intention of becoming a surgeon specializing in breast cancer. Those intentions remained generally unchanged until the end of her third year. Now, a decade later, she is the only addiction psychiatrist in Amarillo.
The Fight Continues Against Alzheimer’s Disease
In 1983, U.S. President Ronald Reagan declared November as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month to foster awareness and inspire action against Alzheimer’s disease, the most common cause of dementia among older adults. Dementia is the loss of cognitive functioning, which affects memory, behavior, problem solving, self-management and in some cases loss of emotional control and personality changes, all of which interfere with daily activities and severely affect quality of life.

TTUHSC Researchers Use NHANES to Search for Hypothyroid-Sleep Apnea Link
Several past studies have sought to determine if a link exists between thyroid disorders like hypothyroidism, a decrease in thyroid hormone levels, and sleep apnea, a potentially dangerous condition in which a sleeping person’s breathing repeatedly stops and starts. However, results from those studies were generally based upon clinical observations that were limited by small population samples and produced often conflicting results.

5K Fun Run Raises Awareness for Cleft Lip and Palate
Parents dreaming of the arrival of a new bundle of joy hope for a healthy baby. Yet, many babies are born with birth defects. According to the March of Dimes, about 6,800 babies in the U.S. are born with oral clefts each year. A cleft lip is a birth defect in which a baby's upper lip doesn’t form completely and has an opening in it.
More than 100 Texas Tech Physician Doctors Make “Top Docs” List
This year, more than 100 Texas Tech Physicians doctors were recognized by fellow area physicians as the best in their field. Twenty-eight Texas Tech Physicians doctors from the Amarillo clinics were selected for Amarillo Magazine’s “Top Docs” and seventy-three Texas Tech Physicians from the Lubbock clinics were selected for Lubbock Magazine’s “Top Docs.”

Mentoring Others and Giving It His Best
As a 23-year-old college graduate in 1998, Dr. Felix Morales, sat next to astronaut, physician and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) School of Medicine alumnus Dr. Bernard Harris at an event to kick off a new premedical society. Morales was asked by Dr. Leo Vela from the Office of Diversity to help start this organization in order for the undergraduate campus to be more inclusive of all people who may want to go into the medical field.
