Brooke Walterscheid Named Texas Tech University System Student Regent

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has appointed Brooke Walterscheid as the student regent for the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents for the 2020-21 academic year, his office announced Thursday (June 18). Walterscheid, originally from Muenster, Texas, is a fourth-year medical student at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) School of Medicine.

Gold Humanism Honor Society Chapter Receives Exemplary Rating

The Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) is a national organization honoring medical students. The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) GHHS chapter, established in 2007 and rooted in service and dedication to caring for others, recently received an exemplary rating from the national board for service in the community.

Trevino Joins TTUHSC to Direct Mental Health Initiative

The Texas Tech Mental Health Initiative, a collaborative effort between the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) and TTU, seeks to bring awareness to mental health issues by connecting local partners, Lubbock-area professionals and community members with the university’s mental health support systems. Nancy Trevino, Ph.D., a TTU alumna who has lived and worked in Lubbock for the last 20 years, has been named director of the initiative.

Party Like It's COVID-19

Despite the easing of restrictions, Richard Lampe, M.D., professor in Pediatrics, said it’s still important to remain cautious because the virus has not disappeared. For those planning to celebrate the Fourth of July with family members or other groups of people, Lampe suggested observing some of the same precautions that have become so familiar over the last several months.

Snake Bites on the Increase in Texas

Reports of snake bites are on in the increase in Texas. Texas Poison Centers have seen a more than 40 percent increase in snake bite calls this year over last year. To date, there have been 372 in 2020.
