WOW! Promotes Health Awareness with Fall Screenings, Health Fair
The Fall into Wellness - Screening and Health Fair, presented by Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center’s Workforce Overall Wellness (WOW!), took place from Oct. 21-23. Throughout the three-day event, WOW! provided TTUHSC students and employees with screenings such as blood glucose, BMI, height, weight, cholesterol, biophotonic scans and free flu shots. The week concluded with a Fall Health Fair where attendees could visit with different wellness activity vendors, see health-conscious demonstrations, and sign-up for WOW!’s pedometer challenge.
“I feel both the health screenings and fair were a success again this year,” said Allison Kerin, Director of Employee Wellness and Recognition. “The goal of the WOW! program is to increase health and wellness awareness as well as provide opportunities to improve TTUHSC employee’s overall health.”
More than 170 employees participated in the screenings and about 230 flu shots were administered. The health fair hosted 14 vendors and saw over 200 students, faculty and staff in attendance.
WOW! allowed those who attended the chance to sign up for their “Holiday Maintain, No Gain Pedometer Challenge”, a fun, interactive competition that encourages employees to walk 10,000 steps per day to minimize weight gain during the holidays. Each participant was given a pedometer to wear every day. They can log their steps on http://www.healthylubbock.org/getfit. The competition also consists of daily challenges that pertain to other areas of wellness (nutrition, financial wellness, mental wellness, etc.) that will be worth extra points.
“The average person will gain up to five pounds each holiday season and will not lose it,” Kerin said. “We offer plenty of opportunities to get 10,000 steps a day at TTUHSC."
TTUHSC and WOW! offers the following ways to get the heart pumping:
- Mondays: Cardio Core and More 5:30p-6:30p
- Tuesdays: Lunch Time Yoga 12:15p-12:45p
- Thursdays: Fusion 5:30p-6:30p
- Outside walking trails (.6 mile or 1.66 mile): Join us on Wednesdays at noon starting Nov 5th to walk the trails. (We will start at the trails starting point in the Pavilion Courtyard.)
