When a successful businessman walked into the South Plains Food Bank on Friday, he shook his head and told the nonprofit’s CEO, David Weaver, that he and his mother used to receive meals from them when he was a teenager.

This year, Weaver expects to distribute 61/2 to 7 million pounds of food to those in need. He said community support — like the Texas Tech Physicians, which held a food drive this month — is vital in helping the nonprofit keep its pantry stocked year-round.
