There wasn’t always a research-focused branch to the institution, according to Dr. Lorenz Lutherer, executive director of the Clinical Research Institute at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center.

When the HSC was established in the 1970s, its primary purpose was to serve a rural demographic and grow healthcare workers to treat the people of this area, he said.
