Expert Available to Discuss Medications and Breastfeeding

A recent report from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found most medications and vaccines are safe for breastfeeding moms and their babies.

The report also proposes changes to drug labels to change the current "Nursing Mothers" heading to "Lactation," giving more detailed information about a drug's transfer to breast milk and potential to harm a breastfed baby.

Tom Hale, Ph.D., professor of pediatrics and founding director of the InfantRisk Center at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in Amarillo, is available to discuss the transfer of medications into breast milk, and a new smartphone application he is developing to help mothers make informed decisions about what medications to take while pregnant or breastfeeding.
