Get Insight into Becoming a Health Care Professional

Student in SIM center

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) will host the annual Future Healthcare Professionals’ Experience (FHPE) from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 30 at the Academic Classroom Building, 3601 Fourth St.

TTUHSC schools have worked collaboratively to provide the West Texas community insight into health care fields. High school students, college students and current professionals interested in entering a new career are encouraged to attend.

Brooke Walterscheid, TTUHSC Student Government Association president and FHPE committee member, said this event will give individuals interested in pursuing health care related professions insight to all fields.

“This experience will feature informative sessions from all disciplines and is aimed at anyone interested in a health care career including non-traditional students looking at going back to school for another degree,” Walterscheid said.

All five schools, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, School of Medicine, School of Health Professions, School of Pharmacy and School of Nursing will have faculty, students and staff present to discuss and demonstrate what a career in each of their respective programs entails.

Walterscheid said students see the steps it takes to get into these careers with offered programs.

“Students will also participate in anatomy demonstrations from our anatomy lab, tours of the F. Marie Hall SimLife Center and also get an overview on financial aid and a breakdown of the costs to attend an academic health institution and advice for applying to and attending an academic health institution,” Walterscheid said.

The event is free and lunch will be provided. Persons interested in attending FHPE can register the day of the event or online at http://www.ttuhsc.edu/studentservices/futurehealthcareexperience.aspx. For more information, call Doris Hereford, TTUHSC Student Services, at (806) 743-2300.

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center

TTUHSC

Beginning in 1969 as the Texas Tech University School of Medicine, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) is now a five-school university with campuses in Abilene, Amarillo, Dallas/Fort Worth, Lubbock, Midland and Odessa.

TTUHSC offers students the opportunity to expand knowledge in programs that are on the forefront of health care education. Our programs and facilities give students the opportunity for hands-on research and clinical experience, and various collaborations with community entities provide students the practical knowledge that is vital to their success.

Almost 50 years since opening, TTUHSC has now trained more than 20,000 health care professionals, and meets the health care needs of more than 2.5 million people in the 108 counties including those in the Texas Panhandle and eastern New Mexico.

Through research, education and patient care, TTUHSC aims to promote a greater health environment for West Texas and beyond. We strive to decrease health disparities for rural populations and improve the health of the community through collaborations with area hospitals and health centers.
