Susan Calloway, Ph.D., FNP, School of Nursing professor, is the recipient of the 2016 Texas Nurse Practitioner of the Year Award. The award was given by the Texas Nurse Practitioners at the state conference in San Antonio. Award recipients must demonstrate excellence as a nurse practitioner and role model for others and contribute significantly to the improvement of care for individuals, families and their communities.
John W. Culberson, M.D., School of Medicine associate professor and Garrison Institute on Aging director of clinical geriatric programs, received the UMC Endowment for Excellence in Medicine. Culberson was presented with the endowment of Bernhard T. Mittemeyer, M.D., Endowed Chair in Medical Excellence in Geriatric Medicine.
Erin Durch, MPAS, PA-C, has been appointed to the School of Health Professions Physician Assistant Rural Fellowship program. Durch will be supervised by G. Toby Williams, M.D., while providing direct patient care to Abilene and the surrounding rural communities. The mission of this program is to educate and train graduate physician assistants while improving medical outcomes in communities that are vulnerable or have limited access to health care.
Jose Joaquin Lado-Abeal, M.D., Ph.D., School of Medicine professor and division chief of endocrinology, received the UMC Endowment for Excellence in Medicine. Lado-Abeal was presented with the endowment of Vernon C. Farthing, Jr., M.D., Endowed Chair in Medical Excellence in Internal Medicine.
Bernhard T. Mittemeyer, M.D., School of Medicine Emeritus Professor, received the namesake of the UMC Endowment Bernhard T. Mittemeyer, M.D., Endowed Chair in Medical Excellence in Geriatric Medicine. Mittemeyer has served 24 years at TTUHSC, including executive vice president and provost and School of Medicine dean, and was recently named Special Assistant for Veterans Affairs by TTUHSC President Tedd L. Mitchell.
P. Hemacandra Reddy, Ph.D., was one of nine project recipients to be awarded a total of $2.2 million by the Alzheimer’s Association’s Sex and Gender in Alzheimer’s grant. Each recipient will receive approximately $250,000. Reddy’s research within the TTUHSC Garrison Institute on Aging will study women’s increased risk for depression and Alzheimer’s.
Scott Shurmur, M.D., School of Medicine professor and division chief of cardiology, received the UMC Endowment for Excellence in Medicine. Shurmur was presented with the endowment of Ralph F. Paone, M.D., Endowed Chair in Medical Excellence in Cardiology. Shurmur joined TTUHSC in 2014 and has since expanded the cardiology program to include advance heart failure care, complex arrhythmic ablation and structural heart disease.
Afzal Siddiqui, Ph.D., Grover E Murray Professor was appointed by President Tedd L. Mitchell, M.D., as TTUHSC Vice President for Institutional Collaborations. Siddiqui is collaborating with different schools and campuses to develop strategies, goals and benchmarks for these initiatives/programs. These goals are strengthening TTUHSC’s economic impact, establish local, national and international partnerships and embolden scholarly activity within the Texas Tech University System.
