Texas Tech University System Shares Research and Plans for Future Growth of TTUHSC at Amarillo
Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) at Amarillo leadership, the
Amarillo Community Advisory Board (ACAB), Texas Tech University System (TTUS) Chancellor
Robert L. Duncan and TTUHSC President Tedd L. Mitchell, M.D., met March 8 at the TTUHSC
Amarillo campus to discuss the ongoing development of a veterinary school within the
Texas Tech University System.
Duncan and Mitchell described progress that has been made toward developing the future veterinary school in Amarillo, which the two anticipate being a national leader in animal health, agricultural animal production and biosecurity. They elaborated on the crucial need for more rural veterinarians and veterinarians specializing in large animals. The establishment of a veterinary school will help meet the needs of many qualified pre-veterinary graduates whose educational opportunities may be limited. Duncan and Mitchell said the model for the future veterinary school will offer innovative curriculum and a cost-effective, collaborative clinical experience to help address both of these needs.
U.S. Congressman Mac Thornberry also visited the TTUHSC Amarillo campus March 8 to learn about some of the current research projects taking place on campus. His visit included tours of laboratories and facilities operated by Thomas Hale, Ph.D., R.Ph., executive director of the InfantRisk Center, and TTUHSC School of Medicine researcher Afzal A. Siddiqui, Ph.D., a Grover E. Murray Distinguished Professor. Thornberry also learned about other university research initiatives and TTUHSC’s plans for future growth and expansion.
During their visit to the Amarillo campus, Duncan, Mitchell, Thornberry and ACAB Chairman Al Cunningham fielded questions from the media related to the veterinary school meetings and future university projects.
