School of Allied Health Sciences Professor Named to Fulbright Specialist Roster

A Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) professor and chair with expertise in public/global health is included among an elite group of scholars in the Fulbright Specialists Roster, a national program that places leaders from higher education and industry in global collaborations that strengthen the positions of U.S. institutions.

As a Fulbright Specialists Roster candidate, Rajinder Koul, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, with the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, is eligible for consideration and selection for collaborative two- to six-week grant opportunities in more than 100 countries worldwide through the Specialists Program. For up to five years, he will remain a candidate until he is matched with a request from an overseas host institution.

The Council for International Exchange of Scholars, which administers the Fulbright Scholar Program, receives requests from host institutions overseas seeking specialists, then contacts those candidates on the roster with the most relevant professional experience to ascertain their interest and availability for the grant opportunity.

Koul has been with TTUHSC since 1994. His research interests include severe communication impairments as a result of either developmental or acquired disabilities, assistive technology, aphasia, perception of synthetic speech and treatment efficacy.

He is a fellow of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association, and a Distinguished Switzer Fellow for an Outstanding Contribution to the Advancement of Rehabilitation Research. Koul has received numerous awards including the President’s Academic Achievement Award, and is co-editor of the Evidence-Based Communication Assessment and Intervention Journal.

Koul earned his bachelor’s and master’s in speech and hearing science from the University of Mysore in India, and his doctorate in speech-language pathology from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.
