As summer comes to a close and the sound of the school bell nears, preparation for the semester can help students of all ages with the stresses that may come with a new school year.

Paul Douthit, associate professor in the department of pediatrics at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center, said he advises parents of kindergartners and first-graders to begin talking about the school year well before the first day of class. Shopping for school supplies, visiting the school and reinstating bedtimes and dinner times early may be helpful.
