Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Accepts Major Land Gift

Texas Tech University Health Sciences (TTUHSC) at Amarillo today accepted a 10.8-acre land gift from Harrington Regional Medical Center (HRMC). The land will allow for future expansion of the TTUHSC campus in Amarillo to accommodate a growing number of students.

“This generous and wonderful land gift from the Harrington Regional Medical Center is one of the great moments in the history of TTUHSC at Amarillo,” said Regional TTUHSC Dean Richard Jordan, M.D. “This land will be the future site of SiMCentral at Amarillo, the Panhandle’s simulation center.”

Jordan added, “This is a great example where organizations and educational institutions join together and work for the greater good of the community and the region.”

SiMCentral, a collaborative of TTUHSC, West Texas A&M University and Amarillo College, uses hi-fidelity human patient simulators to provide multi-disciplinary training opportunities to medical, nursing and allied health students and residents, said TTUHSC President Tedd L. Mitchell, M.D. Thousands of people from the Texas panhandle and five other states rely on TTUHSC at Amarillo to meet their health care needs.

“It will allow the TTUHSC School of Medicine at Amarillo to continue to provide state-of-the- art education to our trainees and also for the schools of nursing and allied health sciences at our wonderful alliance institutions of Amarillo College and West Texas A&M University,” Mitchell said.  “As we continue to grow, so does our mission of educating tomorrow’s health care professionals and our commitment to providing first-rate medical care to those who live in our community.”

The growing presence of TTUHSC at Amarillo follows the vision of HRMC to provide quality healing environments for patients and their families, as well as providing a quality learning environment, said HRMC President Michael A. Callahan.

“Our donation of this property helps us fulfill our mission as a catalyst to expand the high quality medical services at the Medical Center,” Callahan said. “The Harrington Medical Center Board is honored to be a part of the continued development of such a cutting edge SiMCentral expansion project.”
