More Than Just a Hair Cut at Your Barbershop and Beauty Salon

Community members can now do one-stop shopping when it comes to haircuts and their health. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) School of Medicine students will launch the fifth Barbershop Health Check from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 8. The project gives residents the opportunity to check their blood pressure and body mass index (BMI).

Students will provide free health checks to promote the importance of blood pressure awareness and provide information to the Lubbock community.

Chinelo Ikpeama, second-year medical student and project co-coordinator, said providing wellness opportunities at beauty salons and barbershops is a great way to help the community be more informed about their health.

“By holding these health checks at barbershops, we adjust to the convenience of community members,” Ikpeama said. “We can check blood pressure and a person’s BMI while they wait to get a haircut. It takes no time out of their day to learn if they are at risk so they can seek appropriate health care."

The barbershops and beauty salons listed below will participate in the Barbershop Health Check:

  • Bronze Lady Salon, 1716 E. Broadway

  • Gipson’s Barbershop, 1802 E. Broadway

  • Lubbock Hair Academy, 2844 34th St.
