National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
According to the American Cancer Society, more than 230,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed this year, and more than 39,000 women will die from the disease.
In the past year, the best approach in preventing and detecting breast cancer has been the center of debate. According to many experts, that debate left many Amarillo women confused.
During October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, experts from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) Amarillo Breast Center of Excellence want to help educate area residents about local comprehensive care.
The Amarillo Breast Center of Excellence is a collaborative partnership between TTUHSC, Northwest Texas Hospital and Texas Oncology. The center is the only comprehensive breast cancer program in the area, and is one of 210 programs in the nation to receive a three-year, full accreditation designation by the American College of Surgeons’ National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. This accreditation gives patients access to innovative treatments and clinical trials. It also ensures Amarillo-area residents receive quality care without having to leave home.
TTUHSC’s team of physicians includes breast disease subspecialists in radiology, surgery and medical oncology. The center covers all aspects of breast care, research and education. The center also offers a personal commitment to provide patients with a full range of services, advanced technologies and treatment options in their fight against cancer and other breast diseases.
