There is no question the runaway federal budget, with its growing deficit, must be reeled in. In fact, this may be the only issue both the Republicans and Democrats in Congress are in agreement with. The debate now is on how and where to make the cuts.

Lost in all this debate is what could happen to the future of the health care system in Lubbock and across the South Plains. Our regional health care infrastructure is the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, great regional hospitals such as Covenant and University Medical Center and a scattering of quality rural hospitals.
