School of Nursing Re-Awarded Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Scholarships
Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) School of Nursing has for the fourth year in a row, received funding to award scholarships from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing through the RWJF New Careers in Nursing Scholarship Program (NCIN). Scholarships provided through this competitive award will be given to students traditionally underrepresented in the field of nursing.
Five scholarships in the amount of $10,000 each will be awarded to students entering the School of Nursing’s accelerated one-year Second Degree BSN degree track during the 2011-2012 academic year. To date, the NCIN program has supported 55 students at the TTUHSC School of Nursing with a total of $550,000.
“To meet the goals of the NCIN Scholarship Program the School of Nursing maintains an aggressive statewide student recruitment agenda,” said Interim TTUHSC School of Nursing Dean Yondell Masten, RNC, Ph.D. “As a result, overall enrollment of male students has increased 70 percent in the past four years. The number of Hispanic students has also increased by 68 percent since the school became an NCIN grantee.”
The School of Nursing takes all second degree students through a unique online pre-immersion learning process, using RWJF guidelines, to assist each student in the transition back into student life and to prepare them to handle the rigors of an accelerated learning experience. Students in the Second Degree BSN track have coach and nurse educator oversight in the students’ local communities of Lubbock, Austin, Abilene or the Permian Basin.
