TTUHSC School of Nursing to Celebrate New YWCA Location

Combest Central Community Health Center, Nurse-Family Partnership and The Nest to Host Open House and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Large group of TTUHSC adinistrators cut a ribbon.

Community members in central Lubbock now have access to health care services and prenatal programs at one location inside the YWCA. The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) School of Nursing hosted an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony for the Combest Central Community Health Center, the Nurse-Family Partnership and The Nest Tuesday (Dec. 17) at 6501 University Ave.

The Combest Central Community Health Center, a nurse-led integrated center, is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) providing integrated primary health care and behavioral services to Lubbock and surrounding communities. The primary mission is to provide access to comprehensive health services to those in need and to reduce or eliminate health disparities among high-risk populations.

“Anytime our school can work with other teams to provide needed health care, the community benefits,” Wei said. “We serve people in this community who may not have seen a health care provider in a long time due to income or access to care. And this new FQHC location will provide a team of health care providers inside the YWCA to make sure that is no longer a barrier.”

TTUHSC President Lori Rice-Spearman, Ph.D., said high-quality care should be available for prevention to support mental and physical health and be responsive to address disease and illness.

“One of the greatest challenges in this region was, and continues to be, the availability of health care professionals and the accessibility of health services,” Rice-Spearman said. “Our incredible team of clinicians at Combest Central has served this need — and will continue to do so with increased access to health services by partnering with the YWCA and through collaboration between our Schools of Nursing and Medicine.”

Besides primary, prenatal and behavioral health care and diabetes education, the Combest Central Community Health Center also offers prescription assistance, transportation for patients, immunizations, outreach and enrollment and case management services.

Patients will have access to the Nurse-Family Partnership and The Nest programs, both of which provide resources and information for new mothers, as well as access to the Senior House Calls program that will provide primary care practice in the home for senior citizens. The Senior House Calls team is able to establish and coordinate care between families, community services and home health services.

Clinic hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. The clinic accepts Medicaid, Medicare, Children’s Health Insurance Plan (CHIP) or private insurance. Proof of income is required to qualify for a sliding fee scale.
