TTUHSC grant provides screening for area women

TTUHSC Pap DayJanuary is cervical cancer awareness month, and nearly 100 women were able to receive cervical cancer screening, at no cost to them, through the ABC24WT grant. The women received the screenings at two public events hosted by the TTUHSC Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology. The first screening was conducted Jan. 21 in Hereford and the second screening took place Jan. 28 in Amarillo. Teresa Baker, M.D., from TTUHSC and Thahir Farzan, M.D., from BSA Gyn Oncology teamed up for the second straight year to serve the women who normally would not have access to such care.

Patients had the opportunity to sign up for an HPV vaccination drive that will be conducted Feb. 11 at TTUHSC-Amarillo. This will be the first drive conducted specifically for HPV vaccinations in our area. Currently, less than 5 percent of children 9-17 years of age are vaccinated against HPV, a disease that can lead to cancer in both men and women.
