TTUHSC School of Nursing Finalizes Concurrent Admission Agreement with Clarendon College

SON Clarendon Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) School of Nursing and the Clarendon College nursing program finalized a concurrent agreement that will allow students pursuing an Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN) at Clarendon College to declare their intent to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree at TTUHSC while enrolled at Clarendon College. The new partnership is aimed at addressing the shortage of nurses in Texas, which is a particular concern in West Texas where the shortage poses significant challenges to rural areas.

Nursing graduates of Clarendon College will be eligible to enter TTUHSC’s R.N. to BSN program with automatic admission, thanks to the new agreement, which could affect a number of students graduating this May. Additionally, the agreement could help to retain nurses in the Clarendon area by allowing R.N.’s to pursue their bachelor’s degree online, without moving to attend a TTUHSC campus and while working as nurses.

Shifts in the nursing field have recently increased the importance of nurses obtaining a bachelor’s degree. Hospitals and other institutions are increasingly more likely to require starting nurses to have a bachelor’s degree, and completing an R.N. to BSN program can significantly increase salary and expertise. TTUHSC’s two-semester program prepares R.N.s to think critically about evidence-based practice toward improving patient outcomes.
