Need Help with Your Writing Skills?

Meeting the needs of an audience, be it a patient, another scholar or health care professional, is central to the mission of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC). Now TTUHSC students have a resource for enhancing their writing skills with the new Online Writing Center.

The center assists students as they work to become more thoughtful, effective writers by strengthening their analytical and communication skills. Kristin Messuri, Ph.D., associate director of the Online Writing Center, said online tutoring is now available.

“Students have the opportunity to upload writing projects to our website,” Messuri said. “Our experienced tutors will provide feedback at any stage of the writing process in order to help students become more effective writers.”

This site also contains online resources that address a number of common writing tasks and concerns for students enrolled in the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Allied Health Sciences, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and the School of Pharmacy.

“These online resources address writing-related issues such as grammar, punctuation, style, plagiarism, citation and publication, among other topics,” Messuri said.

To access online tutoring, visit ttuhsc.uwc.ttu.edu and use the login link to upload a paper. An experienced tutor will respond with written feedback within 48 hours, excluding weekends. Students interested in additional feedback may submit additional drafts for a total of two tutorials per week.

The Writing Center also will offer monthly workshops on the Lubbock campus that will be video streamed to the regional campuses. The first workshop addressing plagiarism and proper citation will be at noon June 25 in Lubbock at the Academic Classroom Building room 220 and streamed via TechLink to Abilene (ABSOP 2200), Amarillo (AMHSC 4714), Dallas (DLSPVA 100) and Odessa (ODHSC 2C12). For more information or to register for the workshop, email kristin.messuri@ttu.edu.
