“The main benefits is the years of working with patients one-on-one and developing critical listening skills,” says Margaret Dean, a geriatric NP and assistant professor of nursing with the Texas Tech School of Medicine. “The ‘personal space’ issue is not a concern for a nurse who is used to getting in and being close to that patient. That closeness allows us to support the patient to open up.”
