TTUHSC El Paso Announces Donation to Rename University Breast Care Center

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso Paul L. Foster School of Medicine announced the dedication of the Sadie and Annabelle Garbar Breast Care Center, made possible through a transformational gift from the Garbar Family Foundation.

Edward C. Saltzstein, M.D., professor of surgery and medical director of the center, was responsible for the center’s inception in 1994. His belief that medicine must serve the people has benefited more than 60,000 patients and one-third of breast cancer patients in El Paso, Texas, over the last 20 years.

“We are deeply honored by the Garbar Family’s gift to the center,” Saltzstein said. “This gift will ensure the continuity of care to our community."

Members of the Garbar family fought courageous battles against cancer. Sadie was treated at Hotel Dieu in El Paso, Texas, during a time when advancements in treatment were limited.

This gift will ensure patients on the same challenged pathway will receive the best breast cancer care available. For the Garbar Family Foundation, this gift symbolizes the importance of providing patients the best delivery of care as well as the latest in education and research available.

“Celebrating its 20th year of service for treating breast cancer/disease and recent accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, the center will focus on recruitment of additional national leaders, further expanding clinical offerings in our efforts to build a world-class program for the treatment and prevention of breast cancer,” said Jose Manuel de la Rosa, M.D., dean of the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine and vice president of health affairs.
