Kyle Miller’s hands sat folded in his lap. His legs were crossed. For the most part, he didn’t move or speak, a slight smile plastered on his face in anxiety. He just sat nervously, waiting.

At the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center Friday morning, about 129 Texas Tech Health Sciences Center med students sat, surrounded by their families and classmates as they waited for the hands on the clock to move to 11 a.m. — the simultaneous moment their peers across the nation would rip open envelopes and read the letters disclosing where they will spend the next several years of their training.
