Prison board considers contracts with regional hospitals for convict health care - Austin American-Statesman










In a surprise move, state prison officials revealed Friday that they are exploring a plan to run their convict health care program without any participation from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston for the first time in 18 years.

Because UTMB had not proposed pulling completely out of prison care, the plan from corrections officials shocked some, who noted that it would end an 18-year partnership under which UTMB and Texas Tech University have provided medical care to Texas prisons.
