A group of first-year students from the School of Medicine will host the 14th Annual Lubbock City Lights Charity Ball and 7th Annual Golf Tournament.

The golf tournament is scheduled for 8 a.m. on May 6 at the Rawls Golf Course at Texas Tech located at 3720 4th St. The charity ball will take place at 6 p.m. on May 7 at the Lubbock Country Club, located at 3400 Mesa Road.

Prices for the Lubbock City Lights Charity Ball are $110 for individuals, $180 for an individual plus a guest, $70 for physicians, $130 for physicians plus a guest, and $60 for students. Cost for a table of 10 is $1,000.

Giving Back

Executive co-chairs for the event are Kayla Foster and Debra Lin. Foster said the students take pride in getting involved in a community event.

“It’s an honor to give back to this community by supporting deserving charities that provide services for the children of Lubbock,” Foster said. “The money raised this year will benefit University Medical Center Children’s Hospital’s Children’s Miracle Network, Texas Boys Ranch, the Special Olympics and Refuge Services.”

“The funds will be used to provide more beds in the neonatal ICU, help with transitional housing, reduce costs of area competitions for special athletes, and provide hippotherapy for children with special needs,” Lin said. “It’s the least we can do.”

Everyone's a Winner

This year’s golf tournament will have prizes for first, second and third place. Make a hole-in-one at the specified hole and you could win a car valued up to $25,000, courtesy of Gene Messer Volkswagen. A hole-in-one on any of the other holes will result in a different prize of lesser value, such as a driver (golf club) or a computer. All participants will receive a goody bag with different golf items. There also will be prizes for longest drive and closest to the pin. Lunch and range balls are included as well.

The Lubbock City Lights Charity Ball will include a silent auction with items such as an XBOX Kinect, jewelry, art and much more. After dinner, Bo Garza Entertainment will provide music entertainment.

Past Lubbock City Lights events have raised more than $270,000 for charities directly benefiting the Lubbock community. Lubbock City Lights is organized entirely by the students from the School of Medicine Class of 2014.
