Whenever Dr. Jennifer Phy gets discouraged, she takes out her notebook. The baby blue cover is appropriate for what its pages hold. The picture of the white puppy on the front makes her smile. Inside is a long list of dates and names.

Each one is the name of a baby born under Phy’s prenatal care. Phy is a physician at the Texas Tech’s Center for Fertility and Reproductive Surgery, where a large part of her job is to help women who are struggling to conceive. She’s helped more than 500 to date. ...
