Physician Appointed Medical Education Associate Dean

Richard Brower, M.D., has been appointed associate dean for the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine (PLFSOM) Department of Medical Education. Brower is also department chair and a clinical associate professor of neurology.
Brower is currently in his sixth year with the Department of Medical Education. During this time, he has played pivotal roles in the development and delivery of the MS 1-2 curriculum.
In addition, he contributed to the reorganization and development of the department’s faculty, staff and work spaces, development of innovative educational-program-centered teaching and research facilities, institutional preparations for Liaison Committee on Medical Education accreditation, student admissions and implementation of the state-mandated Joint Admission Medical Program summer program.
Brower’s professional roots are in neurology. He is board certified, a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, and a specialist in the clinical management of epilepsy.
Prior to transitioning to the Department of Medical Education, Brower had been in academic clinical practice at TTUHSC since 1996. During these years, he concentrated on direct patient care, clinical teaching of medical students and residents, antiepileptic clinical drug trials and collaborative clinical scholarship.
Brower continues to practice in the outpatient clinic and interprets electroencephalograms at University Medical Center in El Paso.

Paul L. Foster School of Medicine
In 2009, TTUHSC opened the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in El Paso. The school is the first, full-fledged medical school on the U.S./Mexico border, which provides education and opportunities for research and health care for El Paso’s underserved residents.
The school’s geographic location allows students to participate in a variety of clinical patient care learning experiences that include not only traditional medicine, but also international, bi-national, bi-cultural and border health medicine.
