Second Day of the Woman set for Amarillo

Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health Day of the WomanIn its continuing effort to encourage and empower women to take control of their unique health care needs, the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health is set to host its Day of the Woman symposium in Amarillo from 6-8 p.m., Feb. 9 at the Polk Street United Methodist Church located at 1401 S. Polk St.

Angela Knapp Eggers, senior director of community outreach for Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health, said this is the second Day of the Woman program in Amarillo. She said the institute also hosts the program in Corpus Christi.

“Our annual Day of the Woman health symposium is designed to bring pivotal topics to our communities,” Knapp Eggers said. “We want to enable women to be better health advocates for themselves and for their families.”

James B. Maas, Ph.D., a leading international authority and consultant for sleep and performance, and Joanna Wilson, M.D., an internal medicine physician for HerCare, a specialized practice area within the Amarillo Diagnostic Clinic, will be the featured speakers for the 2017 Amarillo event.

Maas, currently CEO for Sleep for Success, received his Ph.D. from Cornell University. During his 48 years as a Cornell faculty member, he has served as a department chair, a professor of psychology, a graduate professor of education and communication and as a professor at the Weill Cornell Medical College-Qatar. He has taught more than 65,000 students, a world’s record for university teaching.

Wilson is director of “Y” Does “X” Make a Difference, an on-line CME series developed by the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health. A self-described “womanologist,” Wilson treats each woman as a unique individual and she believes the patient-doctor team should work toward a common goal where success is based on patient education and empowerment.
